HELLO, HOW ARE YOU?
This is part of a book proposal I’ve been noodling with for a while now, this particular bit being inspired by something I wrote last year about drawing horses and how nothing bad happens when you make a bad drawing. Nobody will die if your horse drawing looks stupid. The worst thing that happens is you get a little better at drawing horses. Just put your fun hat on and draw that dang horse or motorcycle or whatever it is you’re afraid to draw.

I hadn’t been to a life drawing session in a long time, so a friend and I recently decided to try to get into the habit of doing that regularly. These were all drawn from life, directly in ink. I love having fun with the ink, embracing the mistakes, intentionally stretching things out and squishing them.
I should note to the young artists reading this that I only got to a point where I felt like I could REALLY let loose and confidently play around with the human form after seven or eight years of drawing live models almost every week (or several times a week when I was in college). I don’t claim to be a master or anything, but every art teacher on Planet Earth will tell you that you can only break the rules once you’ve actually learned how to follow them. Or something like that.
Whatever, just draw stuff and have fun. But it’s good to build a strong foundation for yourself too! And that can only happen through years of hard work.

I will be at the Small Press Expo (or SPX as it is known) in Bethesda, Maryland this weekend, September 14 and 15. You’ll be able to find me either sitting behind or hiding under table W38B, which can be located with this handy guide. I will have copies of my book (pictured above) and lots of other books and comics and drawings and assorted items. Please come say hello if you’re in the area.

WHY DO I HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO DO MATH?!
Hi, friends. This little comic goes with a book proposal I’ve been working on.
Speaking of books, you can buy the books I’ve already made right over here. Buy yourself a book and then get off the computer and go read it outside with all the bugs and creatures and trees and stuff!
My old pal Robin McConnell interviewed me for his Ink Studs show recently. Give it a listen.

I’m Phil McAndrew and this is the variant cover I drew for the ADVENTURE TIME SUMMER SPECIAL comic book, which I’m pretty sure will be in stores later this month. Hi.
